Wide beam elliptical polarization antenna for synchronizing synthetic aperture radars

, , ,Abstract
Tandem bistatic remote sensing of the Earth requires synchronization of two spacecraft. They can be in arbitrary positions relative to each other. Therefore, it is necessary to use antennas with elliptical polarization and a wide radiation pattern.
The objective of this study is to design a circularly polarized antenna with a wide radiation pattern (approximately 180 degrees) in the S-band.
The antenna's operating frequency was transferred from the X-band to the S-band, followed by a design upgrade. The antenna was designed and subsequently electrodynamically calculated using the CST Microwave Studio automated design system. The radiotechnical parameters of the manufactured antenna were measured. The radiotechnical characteristics of the electrodynamic model and the manufactured antenna were compared.
The obtained results indicate the feasibility of creating an elliptically polarized antenna with a wide radiation pattern in the S-band. A comparison of the electrodynamic model and the manufactured antenna was made. The comparison showed the commensurability of the calculated and measured radiotechnical characteristics of the antenna.
